So what made this endowed chair different? Effort to raise funds for endowed faculty positions chairs are not uncommon on the OSU campus.
Still, this fundraising initiative was unique, different, special.
The Totusek Endowed Chair in Animal Science made OSU history in late 2005 when it achieved its $500,000 goal through the support of nearly 400 individuals and industry partners – the greatest number of contributors to ever support an endowed chair.
Little gifts resulting in one substantial impact.
“The remarkable thing about this campaign’s success is the amount that we reached without a big lead gift – it took a lot of small gifts to get to our total,” said White. “That says a lot about the quality of our alumni and former team members who continue to stay active and interested in our programs.”
While the staggering sum presented a lofty goal for donors to reach, the full amount was officially raised within twelve months – mostly in the form of $100-$250.
Some credit his teaching. Others recognize his contributions to the livestock industry. All recognize the value in carrying on the traditions of a legend.
Totusek’s early teaching roots planted a seed of passion for Oklahoma agriculture within thousands of OSU students.
That passion for agricultural has dramatically influenced industry since Totusek’s grand entrance in 1949, yet Totusek remains oblivious to his quiet role in changing the face of Oklahoma livestock.
“I’ve always felt that nothing good would have happened in my life if it weren’t for the 5,000+ students that came through the program. Their accomplishments and desire to stay connected with OSU are a wonderful reflection on the program,” he notes.
While these contributions only lend themselves to a portion of the dynasty created by a humble Stillwater professor, Totusek is quick to dismiss his influence and focus on the long-term effects of the chair.
“The exciting thing about [this chair], is the potential to impact students in many discoveries over a long period of time,” he said. “Perpetuity is a long time!”
Eligible for matching funds by the State, the million dollar Totusek Endowment will play a critical role in the recruitment of highly qualified animal scientists and students to OSU, will fund further research initiatives and support the award-winning OSU Livestock Judging Team.
So how does the impact of this momentous initiative affect Totusek today?
“It’s kind of humbling. All I did was do my job,” says Totusek.
“And you did it very well,” laughs White.
