Friends Name OSU Scholarship in Honor of Acclaimed Oklahoma Artist’s Family

Dana, Lisa and Chris Tiger Endowed Scholarship to support art students

The Oklahoma State University (OSU) Foundation announced today the creation of the Dana, Lisa and Chris Tiger Endowed Scholarship Fund established by friends of Dana Tiger to benefit an art student at OSU.

The three named individuals of the scholarship are children of renowned American Indian artist Jerome Tiger who died at age 26. Inheriting his artistic genius, all three children are or have been talented painters, but only Dana is currently painting while Lisa devotes her life to HIV/AIDS awareness and Chris died at age 22.

“This scholarship will link future OSU students and a uniquely Oklahoman family. Such a gift helps give a student a sense of place and self,” said Dr. Robert Darcy, a former professor of Dana’s.

Dana is an internationally known artist and the founder and director of Legacy Cultural Learning Community. She draws inspiration from the works of her father as well as her Creek, Seminole and Cherokee roots. A current OSU Distinguished Alumna and a member of the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame, Dana was named a master artist – the youngest ever – by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum in 1997.

“Dana came to follow her father, developing her own style and focusing on her own Native American themes,” said Bob Darcy, Regents professor of political science and statistics at OSU. “Her art has been featured at the United Nations and galleries world-wide. But she also uses her art for helping women’s and Native American causes and her alma mater, OSU.”

Dr. Jennifer Paustenbaugh, director of the Women’s Archives at OSU, has collaborated on several projects with Dana. She observed, “Dana is not only remarkable for her artistic talent but also for her passion and integrity. Many of us see injustices in this world and think there is nothing that can be done. Dana, on the other hand, sees an opportunity to use her talent, her network of friends and her powerful voice to correct the situation. I am excited that this scholarship will link current OSU students with someone of her vision and capacity.”

“OSU provided me with a foundation of mentors, friends and opportunities that I continue to build upon,” Dana said. “Our own stories are unique, but our heritage is something we share with many others. I hope this scholarship will help students celebrate themselves and their heritage with each artistic endeavor and let the world know who they are.”

The scholarship will benefit a part-time or full-time student with a major or minor in art and will be administered by the Multicultural Student Center.

“We want to honor and recognize the legacy of the Tiger family,” Jill Holmes, retired OSU library faculty member who has known the Tiger family for 20 years, said. “I think it’s nice to do something for people while they are still living.”
